When purchasing a water python, expect the biggest. I have caught a wild specimen approximately 3 metres in length, far bigger than the average. Water pythons are not a ‘lazy’ python. They will often travel a fair distance during a nights hunt, and have a higher metabolism than many other pythons. I recommend a vivarium L200cm x W60cm x H60cm for a large, 3m adult. A smaller 2m adult should have a minimum L120cm x W60cm x H60cm vivarium.

Snake enclosures can be made from a number of materials. Most commonly used is a melamine coated wood which covers all sides except the front, which has glass sliding doors. Aquariums can also be used for juvenile water pythons, although a specialist lid should be bought or made rather than the original aquarium lid. It is essential when thinking about what type of enclosure you use, you think about these 6 ‘SSSHHH’ factors:

1) Safety – Can the snake or owner injure itself from the enclosure or any appliances held within?
2) Secure – Can the snake escape through any small hole or cavity?
3) Size – Will the enclosure be appropriately sized?

Décor

Décor in your tank serves two purposes. First being extra cover for your snake and second, allowing for a more natural and pleasing appearance. When choosing décor, think about the safety of the snake. Make sure that whatever you decide to use, it is securely fixed and that no rocks, wood or anything heavy can fall and possibly injure, or even kill the snake. You must also make sure that everything used is parasite free. If anything has been picked up from outside, or has originally come from outside, such as cork bark, you should either boil it, or place the item in the oven at 200 degrees Fahrenheit for approximately 30 minutes. Freezing works for some parasites, however others have been known to survive months in freezing conditions. Some parasites found in English conditions last winters in minus temperatures, so it is not entirely effective.

Once all your décor is parasite free, it is then safe to place inside your enclosure. As a general rule, if you can put pressure on an item to knock it down, a water python is certainly capable of doing so. When positioning rocks or heavy objects, make sure they are completely secure. If it is still uneasy, screw them or use superglue to fix them securely. If it is not possible, the rule is simple: Do not place the item in the vivarium!

If you decide to go for an extra large enclosure, you must provide plenty of cover and hiding areas. A hiding place can be anything from a large tupperware box with a hole cut out to a naturalistic piece of cork bark. There are many kinds of fake plants and décor you can use which is both safe for the animal and pleasing to the eye. One thing you must consider when thinking about the size of the vivarium, is the bigger you go, the more hiding areas you must provide. I recommend at least one hiding place per 60cm in length of the enclosure.

NOTE: Never use sticky tape in an enclosure; this is an accident waiting to happen. Removing sticky tape from any snake is no easy task!

Substrate

Substrate is the medium which covers the floor of your enclosure. It really is a choice that you have to make as the owner of your snake. All options have their advantages and disadvantages. Explained below are the choices available to you in the order which I feel is best.

1) Newspaper – This is disposable, it can be replaced easily and cheaply. It is the safest substrate and is virtually impossible for the substrate to be ingested by the snake. One disadvantage is the ink. If the newspaper becomes wet, the ink can be rubbed off onto the belly of the snake. This does not seem to cause the snake any harm, but should be washed off the snake if you see it. If the snake soils, it will mean a complete replacement of the substrate as soon as possible.

2) Aspen – This is my favourite substrate, it is cheap, very easy for the snake to burrow in, lightweight and dirt free. Like any substrate, I suggest if you spot feces you take it out as soon as possible to minimize the risk of spreading diseases and parasites. When it comes to feeding your snake, aspen can stick to a wet rodent very easily. You must make sure the rodent is completely dry, and as a safety measure place it on a flat surface such as a rock. This will minimize the risk of ingesting aspen when feeding. Aspen however, when ingested can generally be passed through the snake quite comfortably. Aspen can also be quite dusty; it is suggested that you shake it outside to release as much dust as possible before placing into the enclosure. Although this is a very dry substrate, it can be dampened down regularly to raise humidity levels.

3) Bark chips – This is more for tropical species that need to be kept slightly humid. Bark chips hold in the moisture, and are totally naturalistic. It must be kept as clean as possible, if you spot feces, you should take it out as soon as possible. There are different grades of bark chips, I suggest you go as coarse as possible, to minimize the risk of swallowing, resulting in impaction of the gut.

4) Wood chips – When you use woodchips, be careful what species of tree it is from. It must NOT be cedar as when this is heated up, it releases toxic fumes. After a short while wood chips will compact, which means it will become harder for the snake to burrow. Another downside is the risk of ingesting the woodchips while swallowing a food item, this is very easy to do and can cause impaction which will seriously damage the health of your snake.

Heating & Lighting

Water Pythons require a thermal gradient, meaning they must be allowed to move around the enclosure to find their required temperature. The hot end of the enclosure should be 88-92ºF while the cool end should be approximately 80-84ºF. During the night, the temperature should drop to a more constant overall temperature of 80-84º

In my opinion, the ideal way of heating a large snakes enclosure is to use a large 250W Ceramic Heater with a reflector and safety grid so the snake cannot touch it. Ceramic heaters do not give off light and therefore in a vivarium you will need a form of lighting as well. A ceramic heater should be used in conjunction with a thermostat, which will stop the power reaching the heater as soon as the temperature goes above the setting, and turn back on as soon as it is too cool.

Power Plates, spot bulbs and heat mats are also ways of heating a vivarium. These all have their advantages and disadvantages, but in my opinion, none quite weigh out to be as good as ceramic heaters for large enclosures. Heat mats are not recommended at all for large snakes. If they are used, they should not be accessible to it.

As water pythons are nocturnal, they venture out when their predators are sleeping, and their prey is awake. This is not to say though, that they never see the sun, or any form of lighting for that matter. Having artificial light in a vivarium is aesthetically pleasing to the owner, and is a good addition to a snake’s enclosure. They will use this as a photo-period, and their regular time clock will generally adjust to the settings on which you have your light set to. They do not require any form of special lighting, such as a D3 Ultra-Violet light commonly used for diurnal species. An Arcadia Natural Sunlight Fluorescent Lamp is a good form of lighting. This comes in lengths of 12” up to 48” and I suggest you use the largest size able to fit inside your vivarium.

Humidity & Water

Australian Water Pythons are exposed to a high humidity for much of the year, and exposed to a far reduced humidity level during the dry season. This should be replicated in captivity to aid to the general health and well-being of your snake. If you are looking to breed your water python, doing this will greater your chances of success. An 80-90% humidity range from November through to April and 30-50% for the rest of the year will be a suitable humidity gradient.

During the wet season, water pythons really live up to their name and often become almost fully aquatic. A large water bowl where the python can fully submerge is a great additive. Many keepers choose not to provide this as they can be messy and hard to clean. Although this is not a necessity, providing a more natural habitat will always benefit the snake.

Feeding

Hatchlings should be offered fuzzy mice or rat pups, and as they grow the mice or rats should become larger. An adult water python should be fed on large rats. One or two of these every couple of weeks is ample. Hatchlings should be fed on a regular basis, every 5-7 days is ideal. Their metabolic rate is very high and as they are growing, they need a lot more food to keep them going. The only exception when adult females should be fed more is when they need fattening up for breeding, or just after they have laid eggs. A gravid female should be fed more often for several weeks after she has laid her eggs. Snakes have the capability of building up a huge fat reserve, and become obese very easily. Taking the weight off however, is a much more difficult task. Be sure not to overfeed your snake, obese snakes will not live nearly the length as a healthy snake would due to liver and kidney problems. Snakes are both infamous and revered due to their perplexing way of living and characteristics that vastly differs from other animals. Add to that the fact that they have this unmistakable aura that commands fear among other species in the animal kingdom which is not unfounded. Snakes are very famous for having very potent venom with the most lethal of all able to kill a number of fully grown human adults.

Ironically, the world’s most venomous snakes can be found in only one continent and that is, unlike popular beliefs, the Australian deserts, plains and rainforests. Here are the countdown of the world’s deadliest snakes and how potent their venoms are.

1. Inland Taipan Or Fierce Snake - Oxyuranus Microlepidotus

The Inland Taipan is the world’s most venomous snake with an lethal dose of 0.01 mg/kg, it is about 10 times as venomous as a Mojave rattlesnake and 750 times as venomous as a common cobra. The venom of the Inland Taipan is capable of killing 250,000 mice or the equivalent of 100 adult men. Although the Taipan is the world’s most lethal snake, it has yet to take a victim, several bites have been recorded and successfully treated by taipan antivenom which is produced and manufactured by the Australian Reptile Park and the Commonwealth Serum Laboratories in Melbourne. Its main diet is mainly small mammals, particularly native rats, which at times, reach plague proportions. This snake is found on black soil plains of the 'channel country' of the Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia and North South Wales.

2. King Brown Snake - Pseudechis Australis

In comparison with the Inland Taipan, King Brown Snakes’ venom is not that lethal, however it produces its venom in very large quantities. The average Tiger Snake produces around 10-20mg when milked. In comparison, a good sized King Brown may deliver over 150mg in one bite. Unlike the Inland Taipan, the King Brown Snake has the record of the most killings in Australia. One reason for this is because of its common sightings all around Australia as well as the use of the wrong anti-venom. The King Brown Snake, is not really of the Brown Snake genus but actually belongs to the Black Snake genus. For this reason, many people died because Brown Snake Anti-Venom was used instead of Black Snake Anti-Venom.

3. Papuan Taipan - Oxyuranus Scutellatus

The Papuan Taipan, as its name suggests can be found in the Papua New Guinea, it is a close relative of the Australian Inland and Coastal Taipans. Its venom is just slightly more potent than that of the Coastal Taipans however due to poor facilities and lack of anti-venom supplies, a Papuan Taipan bite is still a very serious medical emergency with almost 50% of its victims requiring mechanical ventilation. Like the Australian Taipans, Papuan Taipan’s diet is mostly small mammals, thus they live closely to human habitations.

4&5. MainLand & Eastern Tiger Snake

Mainland and Eastern Tiger Snakes occupy both the 4ht and 5th places because of the strength of its venom and the large quantity in which it is being administered to the snakes’ victims. Its venom is mainly neurotoxic, affecting the central nervous system, but also causes muscle damage and affects blood clotting. They can typically be found through Western and South Australia and Tasmania.

It is very easy to judge someone or something just because of the harm that it poses on you, but we have to remember that no one would kill someone else unless it is provoked. We want our autonomy so it is little to no wonder why some species would want the same as well.

Halmahera Island Boas are a subspecies of the Solomon Island Boas. They are slightly smaller than the Solomon Island Boas and have a more arboreal tendency. They are usually brown in colour, but gold individuals are also known. Nearly all Halmahera Island Boas are wild caught; this species is hard to breed and even harder to rear. Halmahera Island Boas are quite temperamental and caution should be taken when handling. Although they are non-venomous, they have quite a nasty bite. With patience and regular handling however, many wild caught specimens will calm down and take to handling. Adult females can reach 1m in length; males are slightly smaller, around 80cm.

Housing

When keeping any snake as a pet, you generally want to be able to view the snake from the outside of its enclosure, in the most natural surroundings you can offer. This will be more aesthetically pleasing and also aid in the general condition of the snake. If the snake likes its surroundings, it will have a better feeding response and generally grow quicker. A larger vivarium also offers more interest to the snake’s life, and by adding branches and other natural products you will enhance the quality of life the snake has, and stop it from becoming lethargic and overweight. Also, being stronger it should have more of a resistance to any viral infections or any other problems that it may encounter later in life.

For an adult female Halmahera Island Boa, a vivarium 90cm Length x 45cm Width x 45cm Height is ample. I have found this subspecies to be less of a problem to feed than other Candoia, and therefore can usually be placed straight into a larger enclosure. However, if your newly imported specimen will not feed, a smaller, dark, confined enclosure should be offered.

Snake enclosures can be made from a number of materials. Most commonly used is a melamine coated wood which covers all sides except the front, which has glass sliding doors. Aquariums can also be used for Halmahera Island Boas, although a specialist lid should be bought or made rather than the original aquarium lid. It is essential when thinking about what type of enclosure you use, you think about these 6 ‘SSSHHH’ factors:

1) Safety – Can the snake or owner injure itself from the enclosure or any appliances held within?
2) Secure – Can the snake escape through any small hole or cavity?
3) Size – Will the enclosure be appropriately sized?
4) Heating – Is the enclosure able to regulate the temperature properly?
5) Humidity – Will the enclosure last well in humid conditions? Is there enough ventilation for the moisture to escape?
6) Hygienic – Will the enclosure build up a lot of bacteria in small cavities? Is it easy to clean?

By following the steps above, you can have a suitable enclosure made from a variety of materials.

Décor

Décor in your tank serves two purposes. First being extra cover for your snake and second, allowing for a more natural and pleasing appearance. When choosing décor, think about the safety of the snake. Make sure that whatever you decide to use, it is securely fixed and that no rocks, wood or anything heavy can fall and possibly injure, or even kill the snake. You must also make sure that everything used is parasite free. If anything has been picked up from outside, or has originally come from outside, such as cork bark, you should either boil it, or place the item in the oven at 200 degrees Fahrenheit for approximately 30 minutes. Freezing works for some parasites, however others have been known to survive months in freezing conditions. Some parasites found in English conditions last winters in minus temperatures, so it is not entirely effective.

Once all your décor is parasite free, it is then safe to place inside your enclosure. As a general rule, if you can put pressure on an item to knock it down, a Halmahera Island Boa is certainly capable of doing so. When positioning rocks or heavy objects, make sure they are completely secure. If it is still uneasy, screw them or use superglue to fix them securely. If it is not possible, the rule is simple: Do not place the item in the vivarium!

If you decide to go for a larger enclosure, you must provide plenty of cover and hiding areas. A hiding place can be anything from a tupperware box with a hole cut out to a naturalistic piece of cork bark. There are many brands of fake plants and décor you can use which is both safe for the animal and pleasing to the eye. Cork bark is available from almost any reptile pet shop in the UK, and can be ordered in if they do not have it in stock. This is excellent cover for any reptile and is 100% natural. One thing you must consider when thinking about the size of the vivarium, is the bigger you go, the more hiding areas you must provide. I recommend at least one hiding place per foot in length of the enclosure.

NOTE: Never use sticky tape in an enclosure; this is an accident waiting to happen. Believe me; removing sticky tape from any snake is no easy task!

Heating

Halmahera Island Boas are in dense forests and are exposed to a fairly constant air temperature. They do not bask in the sun and so it is not as important to provide them with a dedicated hot spot. Instead, having a fairly constant air temperature of 85-90ºF during the day and 80-85ºF during the night is fine. A large water bowl should be offered for the snake to fully submerge if required. If your Halmahera Island Boa does this constantly, the vivarium is most probably too hot and should be cooled down slightly.

In my opinion, the ideal way of heating a Halmahera Island Boa’s enclosure is to use a power plate. This is a small thin square plate, about 25mm thick which is screwed into the top of the vivarium. It does not need to be protected, as there is no way a snake can grip onto it. It is almost invisible to the eye as it simply sits on the ceiling of the vivarium. The only brand available in the UK is HabiStat Reptile Radiator; it is 75 Watts and is sufficient for any vivarium up to 4ft long and possibly larger. It produces no light and therefore in a vivarium you will need a form of lighting as well. A power plate should be used in conjunction with a HabiStat Pulse Proportional Thermostat, which will stop the power reaching the power plate as soon as the temperature goes above the setting, and turn back on as soon as it is too cool. This is one of the most accurate thermostats on the market today.

Ceramic heaters, spot bulbs and heat mats are also ways of heating a vivarium. These all have their advantages and disadvantages, but in my opinion, none quite weigh out to be as good as a power plate.

One of these every 2 weeks is ample. Juveniles should be fed on a regular basis, every 7 days is ideal. Their metabolic rate is higher than adults and as they are growing, they need a lot more food to keep them going. Halmahera Island Boas have a low metabolism compared to many snakes, they move very little and do not require the same quantity of food that many other species do. Snakes have the capability of building up a huge fat reserve, and become obese very easily. Taking the weight off however, is a much more difficult task. Obese snakes will not live nearly the length as a healthy snake would due to liver and kidney problems. If you are unsure about your snake’s weight, check with a reptile veterinarian.

Once you decide on owning a pet python, you want to learn more about what your pet is like. Starting from what it feeds on to habits of the reptile. It is important to know about a python's behavior patterns and how to keep your pet happy.

In the wild, Pythons roam the jungle; their skin provides a perfect camouflage. They are excellent swimmers and swim in search of prey or stalk in water.

Like other wild animals Pythons don't know how to exhibit their happiness to humans. With experience though, you'll be able to notice anything 'out of the norm' for your python thru its body language ... signs that it may be feeling sick or uncomfortable, though this will be a little difficult to see at first.

The two most important things you can do to make your python happy have to do with the SUN and SWIMMING.

The Sun

Most pythons enjoy basking under the sun. Therefore, if you provide your pet a good hide box and a heat spot, it will use the hide box to rest most of the time, or just coil around the heat spot basking. A warm python is usually a happy python!

Swimming (exercise)

Given the narrow confines of the cage we provide them, pythons don't get much of the exercise they would otherwise get in the wild forests.

The best exercise for pythons is swimming. True, it is not possible to take the python to a swimming pool or an abandoned pond for security reasons.

But you can use a kiddy pool or a large plastic tub to create a python swimming pool.

Just fill the pool or tub with warm water and let your python in it. You will watch it move around happily, keeping its head above the water.

Make it a point to clean the tub or kiddy pool with disinfectants every time.

Swimming is definitely one of the best ways of entertaining your pet python.

Mating your python when it is ready is also another important way you can make your pet Python happy.

What kind of materials should you use when constructing a reptile cage? This question was posed to me once by someone wishing to build their own reptile cage. They were particularly asking about pine and cedar as they had heard these were no good. But it did raise the question about what are the best materials.

All-glass, tubs, melamine cages, screen cages, there are many different types of housing systems for herps. Take your pick, depending on the adult size of the animal, how much room you have to spare, and how much money you are willing to spend!

Aquarium tanks: Good choice for keeping snakes under 6 feet, amphibians, turtles, and basically anything requiring a swimming pool or some humidity. If a screen top is used, there will be enough ventilation to keep a sand boa or leopard gecko or any desert animal in it. If higher humidity is needed, the screen top can be partially wrapped with Saran wrap, and the tank can be treated as a tropical garden; put soil in it and plant some plants to raise the humidity!

Viewing is unrestricted, the tank can be easily cleaned, it will not get scratched, and temperatures are easier to maintain. They are very cumbersome to move around, especially big ones, or fully-loaded ones. They need to be on a solid table or stand and if you do want to move them, the stand will need solid castors. Many lizards such as water dragons should not be kept in glass tanks, as they do not understand glass and will continuously ram into it. Tanks should not be considered for chameleons; cages are better.

Plastic/Rubbermaid tubs: The feeding trough sizes are great for turtles! You can half-fill them with water, pile rocks in a corner for the basking area, put a lilypad or two in it, and have your own indoor pond complete with turtles! For the more common sizes, the sweater boxes and shoe boxes, any non-aquatic herp can be kept in them. In fact, these are used in breeding racks and in households with too many herps to be able to have the amount of tanks/cages to keep them all in. Not good for arboreals, as they cannot climb. Perfect for use during the quarantine period prior to introducing a new animal to an established collection. These restrict viewing, and are generally limited to hatchling animals. Good to use as an emergency/isolation enclosure.

Melamine cages: Melamine is the stuff many countertops are made of. They resist moisture well, so rotting is usually not a problem. They're easily cleaned as well. Custom-made enclosures are sometimes made of melamine, and you can build furniture-quality enclosures yourself. These can be made to fit a leopard gecko or a fully grown green iguana. With a glass front, these enclosures hold humidity incredibly well.

Wood [plywood] cages: Same as for melamine, except much cheaper and easier to work with. Both enclosures, if ordered from a custom builder, can cost a great deal depending on size and material.

Screen cages/Reptariums: Excellent for anoles, chameleons, light-bodied snakes, and young water dragons. The major disadvantages are that the largest size is only 29" x 29" x 72", humidity is very difficult to keep up, and strong animals could knock them over or even move them. This is a great idea for an easily-transported cage for small animals.

MDF or craftwood: Same as for Melamine but also much cheaper. Good for use in combination cages ie Melamine base with MDF sides, back etc. It can be painted, has good thermal properties and if used in conjunction with a coating material such as Contact, will hold humidity well. Excellent to work with and has a smooth finish. You can also use thinner sheets as it retains its rigidity. Some people recommend wearing a mask when cutting or routing MDF as it can be dusty.

Pine or Cedar: Neither of these timbers should be used to construct a cage. Making the whole reptile cage from the pine or cedar has potential health problems for the animals. These woods emit aromatic hydrocarbons that can damage the health of the animals and cause various symptoms. There is probably little issue using as the woods in framing, as the wood has often dried out a lot and released much of the volatile material, or at the very least, the rate at which it is released is very slow.

It also is recommended that you do not use pine or cedar as a substrate. Pine and cedar wood shavings used as substrates have a very high surface area and so the hydrocarbons are released much more readily, making them potentially toxic, especially as the animals like to burrow and immerse themselves in their substrate material.

PVC Tubing & Mesh or Plexiglas: These materials make excellent larger cages for animals such as monitors, larger snakes, chameleons and iguanas. They do tend to lose a bit of heat but any large enclosure will require some effort to maintain a higher temperature. Lighting at the top and some at the sides (if needed) will create a sufficient heat gradient. Short of building a large frame with glass and a large door, this is the most economical way to make a larger enclosure if you do not have woodworking tools.

Overall, if you want to construct your own cages for most reptiles, you are probably better off using plywoods, melamine and MDF types of materials for most of the cage. There does not at this stage seem to be any identifiable health issues caused by these materials. Another benefit with these materials is their insulating properties. Glass is not a good material for most reptile cages (except aquatic species) as it loses heat rapidly. Many glass terrariums have an open top with no seal and this also causes a high heat loss. This means the glass cages are more expensive to heat if you use certain types of heat sources.

The front of the cage can be sliding glass, Plexiglas or a constructed glass door. A pine, oak or similar timber frame at the front will give the cage a more professional and decorative appearance.

If you paint your cage, remember to let it dry out for a minimum of 2-3 days to release as much of the volatile material from the paints. 5-7 days would be even better.

It is a good idea to make the base of a wooden reptile cage from melamine and use Silicon to seal around the edges, to prevent moisture penetrating the melamine or plywood sheeting.

A base of vinyl flooring can also be used if you are concerned about water penetration into the timbers. Be sure to seal it with Silicon and seal the holes where temperature probes are passed through.

You can also coat the MDF or plywood interiors of the cage with 'Contact', a plastic sheeting with an adhesive backing, in any colors you like, before you assemble the cage. This will remove the need to paint the cage inside, reducing fumes, and also provide a water proof seal for the MDF or plywood. Contact comes in a range of colors and is very easy to apply cut and apply.

There is much to be gained from building your own reptile cage. It is good fun and will give you, as a reptile owner, a great deal of personal satisfaction. Before you do go out and purchase a reptile, take some time to research what is the best sort of cage for your pet. You should be aware that many reptiles will grow considerably over time and you may have to build a number of cages. Good luck and enjoy.

If you’re looking for an unusual, eye-catching pet, it’s hard to go wrong with a snake. They’re exotic enough to catch people’s interest, yet hardy enough to require minimal care. Nevertheless, uninformed first-time owners tend to make some basic mistakes, some of which can be quite costly. Here are some simple tips that can help ensure the health of the snake and prevent a lot of aggravation as well.

1. First, take note of how large your snake can grow to be. Most North American varieties only grown to be about four feet long, which is a reasonable size. Don’t let a pet store employee talk you into buying a Burmese python, since these critters can grow to be over thirty feet long, and will require huge cages and tremendous amounts of food. (And before you ask… No, most zoos will not accept these as donations.)

2. Don’t scrimp on cage size. A cage that is too small can be very stressful and unhealthy to your pet. Pet store clerks will sometimes try to sell you caging that is inadequate in size, so don’t fall into this trap. For adequate comfort, the combined length and width of the cage should at least match the snake’s length. Snakes can grow fairly quickly, so don’t forget to take that into account as well!

3. Do find out how docile that particular specimen is. Most non-venomous North American snakes are fairly docile, but if you’re a first-time keeper, you should probably make sure that your prospective pet can be handled easily.

4. Make sure that you select a pet with a hearty appetite. Ball pythons, for example, make great pets—but they are notoriously finicky eaters. Corn snakes make great starter pets because they are exceedingly docile and aren’t picky about what they eat.

5. Snakes—indeed, any reptile—can potentially spread salmonella. The risk involved is very small, but one should still play safe. This is especially true when young children or people with compromised immune systems are involved. Do read up on reptile hygiene and salmonella before purchasing your pet.

Obviously, these tips only constitute some basic advice. I recommend that all prospective owners should read up on snake care in general, as well as the specific needs of the species that they plan to purchase. A little bit of basic research can prevent a great deal of aggravation in the future.

Whatever the reasons may be, anaconda snakes stands apart from most of the other species in the way they stalk, hunt, eat and grow. However, before we explain in details what tickles the taste buds of these serpentine creatures, let us stress that they are no compulsive man-eaters.

Such reptiles belong to the family of snakes called boas and use great physical strength and not poison to hunt down preys and savor them. They do have strong jaws as well as sharp teeth and can inflict a painful bite but these bites are never fatal, especially for slightly bigger preys like deer and dogs.

These teeth do not contain poison sacks beneath them and act only as a tool for the hunting snake to catch the prey and drown it or constrict it to death. However, it is the ultimate muscular strength of such interesting reptile that makes it such a string predator at any fortune place you get the privilege to see it.

Anaconda snakes eating habits are largely guided by the way they hunt and their appetite. As mentioned earlier, these reptiles kill by constriction, that is, they make coils around the body of the prey and squeeze. Every time the hapless prey breathes out and the chest deflates, the grip of the snake tightens, and finally crushes the prey. Given that a full-grown female this reptile can be as big as thirty feet and may weight well over two hundred and fifty kilograms, they need heavy food to sustain themselves.

Baby anaconda snakes prefer smaller and primarily aquatic preys like frogs, fish as well as rodents like mice and rats. Adult, fully grown anacondas prey on practically any animal it can overpower, and the kind of prey ranges from large rodents to fishes, turtles, sheep, dogs, fully grown deeps to even jaguars. Anacondas, however, are no habitual man-eaters and hence pose no special threat to humans populating the river basin.

As a matter of fact, human fear for these snakes is more than reciprocated by the serpentine species, and is known to have retreated rapidly when they faced humans.

Anaconda snakes, atypical to any other snake, do not chew or tear the flesh of the prey. They swallow the complete prey and then use muscular movements to gradually push the corpse down its throat to the stomach where the corpse is digested by enzymes secreted.

Their jaws are not fixed together but are loosely bound to its skull and this helps such reptile to unhinge their jaws and swallow preys that are much bigger than the size or its mouth. If you are disappointed from the fact that they are not fierce and despicable man-eaters and with anaconda snakes eating habits, you should blame the movie and not the snake.

Once you decide on owning a pet python, you want to learn more about what your pet is like. Starting from what it feeds on to habits of the reptile. It is important to know about a python's behavior patterns and how to keep your pet happy.

In the wild, Pythons roam the jungle; their skin provides a perfect camouflage. They are excellent swimmers and swim in search of prey or stalk in water.

Like other wild animals Pythons don't know how to exhibit their happiness to humans. With experience though, you'll be able to notice anything 'out of the norm' for your python thru its body language ... signs that it may be feeling sick or uncomfortable, though this will be a little difficult to see at first.

The two most important things you can do to make your python happy have to do with the SUN and SWIMMING.

The Sun

Most pythons enjoy basking under the sun. Therefore, if you provide your pet a good hide box and a heat spot, it will use the hide box to rest most of the time, or just coil around the heat spot basking. A warm python is usually a happy python!

Swimming (exercise)

Given the narrow confines of the cage we provide them, pythons don't get much of the exercise they would otherwise get in the wild forests.

The best exercise for pythons is swimming. True, it is not possible to take the python to a swimming pool or an abandoned pond for security reasons.

But you can use a kiddy pool or a large plastic tub to create a python swimming pool.

Just fill the pool or tub with warm water and let your python in it. You will watch it move around happily, keeping its head above the water.

Make it a point to clean the tub or kiddy pool with disinfectants every time.

Swimming is definitely one of the best ways of entertaining your pet python.

Mating your python when it is ready is also another important way you can make your pet Python happy.

One of the more popular exotic pets on the market over the years has been the boa constrictor. Some individuals are not aficionados of reptiles, but those that are enjoy boa constrictors for their grace, beauty, and strength. Snakes are relatively easy to care for, but special handling and maintenance is necessary for your safety as well as theirs.

Boa constrictor is a catchall term for several species of the reptile snake, some of which are endangered and protected. The two most common sub-species you will find readily available in the pet store are the red-tailed boa and the common boa constrictor. The lifespan of the average boa is twenty-five to thirty years, so if considering the animal as a pet you need to remember that it is a very long commitment. The average size for a full grown red-tailed boa constrictor is eight to ten feet long with a weight up to fifty pounds. Though generally docile in temperament, you should respect their strength at all times.

When selecting these pets you should generally opt for a captive bred animal. The snake breeds fairly readily in captivity and these animals are usually more healthy and docile than wild animals. All constrictors are either in the threatened or endangered category in the wild thus giving all the more reason to purchase a bred animal. When selecting a snake look for these signs of a generally healthy animal.

* strong body
* no loose skin
* tongue flicking
* clear skin
* no external parasites
* healthy scales
* no wounds
* reaction to handling by coiling and then relaxing after a bit

To house one, glass aquariums with a locking screen top will suffice for small to medium sized animals. Once the snake is larger a secure cage with a minimum floor space of ten square feet will be required. Line the bottom of the cage with paper towels, or a durable indoor/outdoor carpeting. Reptile bark may be used as well, but this is a more expensive way to go. Whichever method you use keep the bottom clean to retain the overall health of the snake.

The temperature of the cage provided to the boa constrictor is critical, so use very accurate thermometers to keep them within the ranges of eighty-two to ninety by day and seventy-eight degrees to eighty-five degrees by night. A slightly warmer "basking spot" of ninety to ninety-five degrees should also be available for the snake. Never allow the snake direct exposure to any heating element including heat rocks, constrictors are very susceptible to burns from such sources.

To feed one provide a separate enclosure other than the regular housing for this purpose. This creates an association with feeding somewhere other than the usual cage reducing the chance of an accidental bite when usually handling the animal. The smaller the snake the more often feedings need to occur. Usually every five to seven days for young snakes, ten to fourteen days for slightly older snakes, and adults needing fed every three to four weeks. Generally mice, rats, and rabbits are the best food and you should ensure the meal is no larger than the widest part of the snake. Once feeding has occurred do not handle the snake for twenty-four hours to ensure proper digestion.

A sturdy water dish is also required within the cage, as the boa will tend to bath during shedding to help with the skin removal. This will also add extra moisture to the air in the cage for the conditions snakes prefer. Another essential accessory is a place to hide, as well as a sturdy branch for crawling. These are two things which the animal needs to feel more comfortable and at home in their enclosure.

If you examine the types of snakes found around the world, you will be amazed at the diversity inherent in the many types of snakes, their behaviors, and their habitats.

While all snakes have certain obvious traits in common (such as scales, limbless bodies, and forked tongues), they also posses a wide range of characteristics that are unique to each species.

For instance, certain types of snakes are venomous, while others are not. Some give birth to live young (viviparous), while others lay eggs (oviparous). Some snakes are the size of a pencil, while others are nearly as long as a school bus. Some types of snakes eat rodents exclusively, some eat rodents and birds, some eat fish and frogs, some eat other snakes, and some eat a variety of the above ... and some even live off of eggs!

Like I said, there is plenty of diversity among the types of snakes around the world. But how does one understand the many snakes of the world? How are they classified and organized? That's what we will examine in this article.

Classifying the Types of Snakes

According to current scientific classification (which is constantly being revised, by the way), there are somewhere between 2,500 and 3,000 snake species around the world. With so many types of snakes in the world, a good classification system is a must!

Snakes are grouped by the same scientific classification that applies to all other animals. Snakes are part of the Squamata order of reptiles -- an order that also includes most lizard species. All types of snakes fall into one of 18 families within the Squamata order, and each snake family is further broken down into genus and species.

Let's look at an example to clarify things. Here is the scientific classification of the western diamondback rattlesnake (starting at the class level):

* Suborder - Serpents
* Family - Viperidae
* Subfamily - Crotalinae
* Genus - Crotalus
* Species - Crotalus atrox

Thus, the western diamondback rattlesnake is a species of snake within the Viperidae family -- venomous types of snakes that also include vipers and adders.

As stated previously, there are currently 18 families of snakes around the world. But this number is often argued and disputed, because the scientific classification of reptiles (including snakes) is constantly in flux.

Major Families of Snakes

Here are the five families of snakes that account for the majority of species:

* Colubridae -- The family (known as colubrids) is by far the largest family of snakes, accounting for nearly two-thirds of the world's snakes. The vast majority of colubrids are non-venomous, though a few rear-fanged colubrid species are able to produce venom (such as the lyre snake of California). But even the venomous members of the Colubridae family are considered harmless to humans. So it's safe to say that colubrids, as a whole, pose no threat to humans.

* Boidae -- The Boidae family of snakes (known as boids) includes python and boa species. The three largest types of snakes in the world -- the anaconda, the reticulated python, and the African rock python -- are all members of the Boidae family. But smaller species like the royal python / ball python are also found in this family of snakes. All boids are non-venomous, powerful constrictors. Thus, they rely on strength instead of venom to kill their prey.

* Elapidae -- The Elapidae family of snakes (known as elapids) includes cobras, mambas, coral snakes and taipans. All elapids are venomous, and some of the most venomous snakes in the world are found within this family. Elapids produce a neurotoxic venom that attacks the central nervous systems (breathing) of their prey).

* Viperidae -- The Viperidae family of snakes (known as viperids) includes rattlesnakes, vipers, adders and other species. All types of snakes in the Viperidae family are venomous. In the United States, most venomous snakes species fall within this family (including all rattlesnakes, the copperhead, and the water moccasin). The coral snake (and elapid) is one of the only venomous snakes in the U.S. that is not in the Viperidae family. Nearly all members of this family produce hematoxic venom that attacks the tissue and blood of their prey.

* Hydrophiidae -- As the name suggests, the Hydrophiidae family includes sea snakes. Most sea snakes are venomous, and some species produce an incredibly powerful venom, a drop of which could kill a grown man. Fortunately for humans, sea snakes are reluctant to bite unless provoked (though you should still leave them alone).

The beauty of keeping reptiles is that once you've set up their caging requirements and learned a few basic skills, there are many species that can be safely and efficiently kept within the home and should live out a full, healthy life.

Fortunately the vast majority of the suitable snakes one might choose to keep, such as corn snakes, king snakes or milk snakes, require very little special treatment and soon become very low maintenace captives.

Quiet, well-behaved, not requiring regular walks and virtually scent-free whilst being unusual and fascinating, snakes can be an ideal pet for today's ever-busy lifestyle.

At it's simplest, a glass fish tank with a specially-sold reptile hood or one of the specially made reptile cages (such as those available from http://www.petsmart.com) may be used, and these are often available for sale second hand in local papers.

Wooden cages should be avoided unless they are treated so as to avoid any spillage from the water bowl (many snakes like to bathe) and ventilation should be good as moist cages often lead to skin complaints or respiratory problems.

A length of around 30-45 cm is suitable for a hatchling snake whilst an adult will require a length of 60-90 cm so it can stretch out.

The cage should be furnished with one of the reptile-safe substrates such as beech chippings or corn cob granules and should be placed 1/3 - 1/2 over a safe, specially-sold, low-wattage heat mat to gently warm the substrate for the snake.

These cost just pennies to run each day and generate a gentle background warmth for your pet.

In particularly cold situations such as bad weather, during night-time or in a room which doesn't warm up appreciably during the day an additional form of heat is recommended, such as a gauze-encased lightbulb, to warm the warmer end of the cage (the "hot spot") to around 24-26'C.

This temperature should be maintained at one end of the cage throughout the day though this may drop by a few degrees at night without worry of danger to your pet. If using a bulb a thermostat is recommended to enable you to accurately control the temperature and prevent the cage overheating.

A hide should be included as snakes are often quite reclusive and like to hide away for much of the day, showing themselves early in the morning and later in the evening.

This could be a specially-sold reptile hide but I often simply use a box - like an old cereal box - as they're free and easily replaced when they get dirty.

A solid waterbowl - ideally a terracotta dog bowl - large enough for the snake to submerge itself in (bathing is good for the skin) but difficult to tip over should be filled with fresh water and changed daily as in a warm environment plenty of water is likely to evaporate, and in addition many snakes like to deficate in their water bowl.

And apart from some food you're now all set up!

As you can see keeping the smaller, more docile snakes *doesn't* have the break the bank, nor do you these days need to "make do" with substandard products. Companies like ZooMed make high quality, specialist hardware for just this purpose, and make it available for a very reasonable cost.

Now all you need to do is to convince your girlfriend/wife/mother to let you have the snake itself ;-)

First, the following assumptions must be made:

The sexes of breeding stock are known by the keeper and are of adult breeding size.
All breeding stock are of reasonably good health and have little or no parasites.
The keeper has a well-established rodent-breeding colony or a ready source of feeder rodents.
Let's use an arbitrary date of August 1st as the starting point. Between August 1st and December 1st the main concern is feeding. This time period is extremely important and may determine your success later. Females need to put on an excessive amount of body weight during this period before being cooled for the winter. Basically, you offer as much food to the females as they will take during this time. An every-seven-day feeding schedule is quite adequate. Adult specimens usually will eat several food items per feeding on this schedule and have adequate time for digestion before the next feeding. To get an idea of typical food requirements, it takes about 8-12 adult mice per month for an adult female albino corn snake (Elaphe guttata) or 12-15 fuzzy (10-day-old) mice per month for an adult female Greer's kingsnake (Lampropeltis mexicana greeri). It is very important to maintain a cage or substrate temperature of 75-83°F throughout this 4-month period to allow for adequate digestion. Females store fat in the posterior portion of their body that is later critical when forming eggs. Male specimens generally desire less food than an equivalent-size female and do not store as much fat. It is important to get body weight on the males as well, as they may not eat at all during the breeding season. Hopefully, by December 1st, the females will have enough body weight to later produce a maximum number of fertile eggs for their size.

Between December 1st and March 1st a cooling period seems necessary to initiate physiological changes in both sexes. This sets the groundwork for development of eggs and maturation of sperm when warming begins. The cooling temperature should remain between 55-65°F throughout this 3-month period. Males and females should be in separate cages starting on December 1st. NO feeding is done during this 3-month period but water must be provided.

There has been a great deal of argument as to whether light cycles affect reproductive success in snakes. I believe the only essential criteria to initiate reproductive activity is a cooling followed by a warming period. For the purposes of not excluding anything, however, the following is a list of light-cycle methods that have been successful:

On March 1st, 13 hours of cage or room light per day increasing 20 minutes per week thereafter ending at 16 hours of cage or room light per day on April 30th. No sunlight is allowed into the room.
Natural sunlight allowed into the room on a year-round basis with incandescent light or heat tape used when heat is required to maintain correct temperatures.
Twenty-four hours of light per day all year round even during the cooling period.
However, it has yet to be proven conclusively that light cycles influence reproduction in these genera although breeders still use artificial light cycles.

Aside from lighting, between March 1st and August 1st is the time to concentrate on captive breeding. The best feeding response of the entire year usually takes place throughout March and into early April. This is again an extremely important time for fattening of the breeding colony. The snakes can begin feeding within 24 hours of their initial warming on March 1st. It is important to raise the cage temperature to about 83°F at some point each day but also allow it to drop to 75°F each day. This allows for adequate food digestion and also the ability to get away from prolonged heat. A constant, 24-hour per day cage temperature of 83°F or above may cause sterility of males in certain species. A good behavioral cue that the snakes are TOO warm TOO long is if most of the males continually stay as far away from the heat source as possible (i.e., right up against the glass). Providing a cage thermal gradient is the best way of insuring adequate, but not excessive, heating. In this way the snakes can select their own temperature preference.

Specimens that respond well to feeding will usually shed soon after March 1st. For Elaphe and Lampropeltis species, the first shed usually occurs between March 20th-31st. For Pituophis, the first shed normally occurs between March 23rd-April 4th.

Although these shed dates don't apply to every specimen, there seems to be a trend toward this occurrence. The first shed gives the keeper an idea as to how close the females are to full follicle (unfertilized egg) development. Females appear to reach maximum reproductive receptivity from 3-14 days after this first shed. The easiest way to determine if a female is reproductively active is to introduce her into the male's cage. If, upon body contact with the male, the female violently flips her tail, bunches up her body, or constantly tries to stay away from the male, she probably is not ready. Under these circumstances, the male may try to overpower the female or rapidly lose interest. However, if the female responds by slowly crawling around the cage stretched out, allowing the male to crawl on her back, and lifting her tail to expose the cloaca, she is ready. To insure a viable mating to a female that responds positively, it is best to reintroduce a male at least 2 more times, several days apart. At some point in early egg development, the gravid female will begin to show the negative response to the presence of the courting male.

Females will continue to feed for several weeks into pregnancy but generally stop eating during the last 3 weeks before egg laying. Internal development of the eggs after mating normally takes between 28 and 45 days, depending on the individual and the mean cage temperature during this period. Another shedding occurs toward the end of pregnancy. Females will shed approximately 7-12 days prior to egg laying. This is an important cue in preparing a suitable egg-laying location and also for knowing approximately when the eggs will be laid.

Most of the egg laying will take place in the month of May with some species ( i.e. L. t. sinaloae )laying slightly later. I will discuss-preparing for egg laying and incubation of eggs in a future article. As soon as egg laying takes place, most females will feed heavily to regain body weight. It is possible to perform a second mating at this time. If a female has good body weight after the first egg laying, she may rapidly develop new follicles. It is apparently important to keep the male and female together constantly immediately after the first egg laying to ensure a second reproductive success. This is in contrast to the male-female introduction-separation method for the first mating. If a female does produce a second clutch, she will follow the same incubation-shed pattern as for her first clutch. Most second clutches are smaller than the first, and laid in middle to late July.

In summary, the following is recommended:

Heavy feeding of females and males at all times of year except in the cooling period and the latter part of pregnancy.
A cooling period of approximately 3 months at temperatures between 55-65°F.
Separation of the males and females during the cooling period.
At all times except during the cooling period, maintain a cage or substrate temperature of 75-83°F, allowing the temperature to rise and fall within this range each day.
Introduction of females into the male's cage when full follicle development is suspected-watch for positive female reaction.
Observation of shed dates in relation to follicle development or egg-laying date.

CHARACTERISTICS: Typically docile and attractive constrictors that qualify as excellent pets. Generally even tempered and easy to handle. Large wild caught animals may initially be nervous and bite or musk when threatened, with a bit of patience they tame easily. An efficient climber and predator of rodents and birds. This card is designed to treat all the sub-species as a whole, the general husbandry described is applicable to the North American sub-species of rat snakes.

REQUIREMENTS: Ambient temperatures of 74 - 82F. Enclosure length at least 2/3 the animal's length, and width & height a minimum third of its length. Does not tolerate ambient temperatures over 90F for long periods. Bred consistently in captivity, buy captive bred when possible.

DIET: Consist of mice and rats. In the wild prey items also include birds and lizards.

SIZE & LIFE SPAN: Maximum size 5 - 8 (black rat) feet, with an average size of 4 feet. May live 15+ years in captivity, a reproducing female may live a few years less.

DIFFICULTY RATING: Easy, an ideal beginner's snake. Hardy, tolerant of handling and tractable enough for children. Forgiving in its' requirements and needs.

BREEDING: Sexual maturity is reached in the first 1 - 3 years. Refer to the Snakes Sexing care card if the sex is unknown. Breeding season in captivity: Spring/Summer, after a 2 - 3 month hibernation period (winter) at temperatures of 45 - 55F. Animals should be in excellent condition and weight prior to hibernating(brumating). Breeding occurs after hibernation, lays 1 - 2 clutches per year of 6 - 30+ eggs. Incubation temperatures of 82 - 85F (optimal), approximately 60 days to hatch. One of the most frequently bred snakes in captivity. Further reading refer to the Colubrid Breeding care card.

SUBSPECIES: Black Rat, Yellow Rat, Gray Rat, Gulf Hammock, Everglades, Baird's, Texas, Green, Greenish, Trans-Pecos, California Rat, Great Plains, Rosy, Fox, Everglades, .

STATUS IN THE WILD: Wide spread and fairly common in it's range, many populations are being completely wiped out as the habitat is being replaced by land development. Some populations are being reduced by over collecting from commercial dealers and collectors.

DISTRIBUTION: Most abundant in central to Eastern United States.

SETUP
Caging: Includes Neodesha reptile caging, aquariums, plastic sweater boxes and custom built vivariums. Cages must be escape proof, easy to disinfect, free of sharp edges, dry, well ventilated, and hold heat to ensure proper temperatures. Avoid unfinished wood and porous surfaces when designing custom cages; these surfaces are difficult to clean and disinfect. Heating: Variable under cage heating pads, thermostatically controlled light and/or under cage heat strips, and hot rocks. Don't use a small hot rock for an animal that is proportionately larger; burns often result if the animal is forced to rest on this type of heat source. A heat source should warm 1/4 to 1/3 of the cage with a basking floor temperature of 84-88F. Use a thermometer! The unheated area should never drop below 70F (unless hibernating). It is essential to allow the animal an area that provides an optimal basking temperature and a cooler area so that the snake can thermoregulate. Do not keep the animal too warm, this a health risk and very stressful. Caution should be used when using lamps. If the heat is extreme it may dry out the animal, create health problems, kill or burn the animal. It is better to heat with an under cage heater and a low wattage lamp. Red lights may be used for heating during the night since this type of light does not disrupt the animals photo period (undetected by snakes vision). Lighting: 12 hours on, 12 hours off, incandescent or fluorescent. Never leave visible lighting on continuously, this causes stress. Furnishing: A water dish large enough to allow the animal to soak located near the heat source. Always provide clean water, disinfect bowl weekly. A hide box or shelter in the heated end of the cage provides security. A hide box may also be provided in the cooler area; always locate at least one in the heated end so the animal does not have to choose between security (from a hide box) and a warm area. A climbing limb that has been disinfected, avoid untreated branches and rocks since they may harbor ecto parasites. Substrates: Newspaper, paper towels, paper bags, or artificial grass are safe and inexpensive. Aspen and Care Fresh bedding also may be used but it is advisable to feed on a different surface, since it could lodge in the snake's mouth. Gravel, sand, mulch, corn cob and shaving may be used but may ultimately cause health problems such as intestinal blockage, respiratory infections, skin lesions and "mouth rot." Cedar is deadly to reptiles! Cleaning: A solution of water, detergent and 5% household bleach is safe and disinfects, rinse surfaces thoroughly with clean water after cleaning.

FEEDING

Small, frequent meals are recommended, once to twice weekly. A baby rat snake should begin feeding on small pinkie mice (newborns). A snake may be induced to feed by placing it in a small locking deli style container (with air holes) with crumpled paper towels and then introducing a food item (leave in overnight). As the snake grows increase the food size and if desired reduce the feeding frequency. Offer food items at least once every 10-14 days. Rat snakes may refuse to feed during the winter months, this is normal and correlates with the natural hibernating urge. If this occurs provide a cool location in the cage and let the snake choose. Hibernation is not essential, as spring approaches feeding should resume to normal. Many animals may be conditioned to accept pre-killed or thawed rodents (warmed) at feed time. This technique is safer, than feeding live rodents since this prevents the snake from being bitten by the rodent. Shedding is dependent on the animals growth rate and condition and may occur every month or several times a year. Rat snakes often refuse feeding attempts while shedding. Avoid handling after a sizable meal; this is stressful and may cause regurgitation. Never leave a rodent in the snake's cage for lengthy periods; a rodent can cause serious damage to your pet! Provide food & water for any rodent left in the snake's cage longer than 30 minutes. Never handle rodents and then handle a snake; you may be mistaken as food. Develop proper feeding habits. Maintain accurate feeding and health records. Reluctant Feeders: May be more apt to eat at night or with lights off, and may prefer to ambush prey from a hide box. Problematic babies may be apt to eat a dead mouse pinkie with its' brain exposed. Try a variety of rodents and sizes. Is the animal sick? Reduce handling to a minimum. If an animal refuses all feeding attempts, consult a veterinarian or an experienced keeper for advice.

HANDLING

Always support the snake's body; avoid fast movements. Do not treat the snake as a toy. Avoid techniques which restricts a snake's movement. Avoid public situations which draw attention to the animal since this is stressful to the animal and possibly your audience. A nervous snake may occasionally bite; if biting occurs and is a problem, wear gloves. The handler must convince the snake that it is safe, trust must be learned. Snakes bite for two reasons: they have mistaken you as food or they are in fear of their safety. Snakes do not bite because they are mean.

PROBLEMS

1) Mouth rot appears as cankers or lesions in the mouth. This syndrome results from rubbing on rough surfaces, stress, rodent bites and materials lodged in the mouth. To treat, clean infected area (debride) with a solution of hydrogen peroxide (dilute 50:50), remove loose material (necrotic tissue) and swab with betadine 2X daily as needed. If condition persist, medical attention is needed. 2) Respiratory infections appear as excess fluid in the mouth and nostrils, with gaping of the mouth. These infections result from inappropriate conditions such as cool temperatures, dusty bedding, and stress. To treat, ensure proper temperatures and reduce all possible stress to the animal. If condition persist, antibiotic therapy will be necessary through a veterinarian. 3) Dry sheds are due to dehydration, improper temperatures, illness and stress. Allow the animal to hide in a moist location when shedding, such as a water dish or container with a damp towel or spagnum moss. 4) Thermal burns and "Belly Rot" are caused by exposing the animal to a high heat source or unsanitary conditions. Follow procedure for (2), treat all damaged tissue. Correct the improper conditions. 5) Mites are small blood sucking ecto parasites, which are irritating to snakes. They appear as small black poppy seeds on the animal or in its dish. Consult your pet shop or fellow herper for treatment (Bio strip, ivermectin etc.). 6) Internal parasites and bacterial infections can be a problem especially with wild caught animals. Symptoms such as failure to thrive, regurgitation, failure to feed, sickness and depression are all possible signs of a parasite infestation or bacterial infection. It may be a wise move to bring a fresh fecal sample to a veterinarian, and if necessary treat for parasites. Refer to the Snake Disorder care card.

Emerald Tree Boas
The purpose of this article is not to instruct you or tell you how to keep your emerald tree boas (Corallus caninus). It is simply a guide; a guide based on my experiences with these animals. Through my experiences, I have been through all of the ups and downs of emerald keeping. I have brought animals back from the dead and have accidentally killed perfectly healthy specimens. In no way do I consider myself an expert, just an enthusiast. There’s something about this particular species and all of its variants which is just mystifying. Although my animals will sit for hours, sometimes days, on end without so much as moving an inch, I often find myself staring blankly into their cages for large portions of time, watching and adoring these incredible emerald beauties


Caging:
Caging for emeralds has but three major requirements, proper temperature control, proper humidity control, and perching space. Beyond this, it is completely up to you how it is that you would like to house your emerald tree boa. My personal opinion, which I cannot stress enough is SIMPLICITY, SIMPLICITY, SIMPLICITY.
I have found that the simpler a cage is, the better it works. Although I favor a very sterile environment, I have to admit that there is no better display animal for an aesthetically pleasing setup than an emerald tree boa. In my case, when housing several animals, it is just not convenient to have naturalistic vivaria all over the place which warrant double the effort to keep clean when compared to a sterile type cage. As for my taste, I think that Neodesha Plastics makes the ideal emerald tree boa cage. Sure, there are quite a few plastic companies out there putting out cages that would also work well for emeralds but I think one important advantage that Neodesha has over these guys is price. A standard front-sloping 36" cage works wonderfully for a single animal and will run about $85. Aside from the cage all that is necessary for a basic emerald set up is a branch or limb (equal to the thickness of the snake), a water bowl, a spray bottle and a 2 foot piece of Flexwatt heat tape with some kind of thermostat system. The 36 inch model keeps the perfect temperature (relative to outside ambient temperature) with just a 2 foot piece of flexwatt. A horizontal branch running the length of the cage and a large water bowl complete the basic requirements. When acclimating fresher imports I often employ the use of plastic vines or plants in the cage, this adds additional cover and makes the acclimating process go a little easier. However, I must warn you that these can pose a hazard as emeralds have been known to accidentally ingest plant material which could inevitably lead to an impaction.

At my facility I also use Melamine cages for larger colonies as well as a few other custom made cages of varying size. One such cage is a custom made rain chamber enclosure made by Dragon’s Purse Enterprises. This is a stunning piece of work as the cage’s dimensions are 4’ x 6’ x 4’ (w x h x d) and is made into a furniture quality piece of art. As for younger snakes, I house my juvenile snakes in the 2 foot Neodesha cages in the same basic setup mentioned above. Baby snakes are kept in standard 2.5 gallon tanks with about 1/4" of water on the bottom. They have the typical horizontal perch and the top is covered with a screen and a piece of glass that is moved accordingly to control humidity in the cage. Heating is accomplished by a piece of 3" flexwatt tape which runs along the bottom of the tank. This works nicely because the temperature and humidity are both kept accordingly due to the tape. One thing I must mention about this type of setup is that it is absolutely vital to keep the water on the bottom sparkling clean at all times. As soon as the snake defecates the cage must be emptied and disinfected to prevent harmful bacteria from developing. This can quickly bring about the demise of a delicate neonate, cleanliness is important no matter what size your emerald is due to the high humidity environment in which emeralds and bacteria both thrive in.

As I said before, caging is completely relative to your taste however, make sure you meet the basic requirements as well as common sense safety requirements for you and your snake. When choosing a heat source, avoid a bulb or other heat source that is exposed to your snake. Emeralds are great at burning themselves on exposed light bulbs and ceramic heat-emitters. Another reason to avoid exposed bulbs is because emeralds are attracted to heat and will often zero in on the bulb as a threat or possible food item when provoked. I have seen emerald tree boas strike at and break light bulbs, sometime resulting in injuries such as cuts and burns. If you do opt to have a bulb in the cage, make sure it is shielded from the snake. This can simply be accomplished by making a small cage around the bulb which prevents any type of contact. Just be extra careful when disturbing your emerald tree boa as it could still probably injure itself even with the wire caging.

For substrates, I like to use either paper towels or newspaper (simplicity, get it). This proves to be the easiest to maintain both humidity and a clean environment, the only drawback being that it is not all that aesthetically pleasing. Besides easy maintenance, I feel that it is much healthier. Although many people successfully use mulch or commercial bedding for their cages with no problems, I have seen severe cases of mouthrot resulting from small pieces of substrate lodging itself in the snake’s mouth. Often, undetected by the keeper until it is too late. Another reason that keeps me from using a substrate is that it is a potential breeding ground for harmful bacteria and ectoparasite. Mites often become impossible to eradicate when using a substrate such as mulch. Like I said, it’s all very relative.

Another important aspect of caging, probably the most important piece in a cage is the horizontal resting place for our arboreal friends. In the wild, emeralds live on limbs in trees of varying size and shape. I prefer to use branches taken from my local patches of woods (or backyard trees) which are changed several times throughout the year. It is important that you provide your emerald tree boa with the right diameter or it will feel uncomfortable. Ideally, I try to use a branch that is at least as thick as the thickest portion of the snake, hopefully with some variation. A branch with sections that branch out is ideal since it will provide several different diameters for the emerald to rest on. I have noticed that they will often take advantage of forks or crotches in branches, or sometimes little thin areas will be utilized. No matter what variation there is always make sure that there is some portion about as thick as the snake itself. This is very important when you snake eats. It is vital for your emerald tree boa to be able to evenly distribute its weight along the branch. If it is unable to do this it will sit uncomfortably and sooner or later regurgitate any significant meal. The purpose of changing the branches is primarily to provide the snake with some variation but I also like to keep the wood fresh. Since I usually like to use pieces that have fallen naturally, they are often dry. When kept in a high humid environment they are very likely to develop some sort of fungal growth. This may or may not be harmful to your snake. Some forms of fungus can develop into a form of scale rot which is obviously not good for your pet. You can usually scrape it off and disinfect the branch again, I prefer to get a new piece. No matter what, it is very important to properly disinfect the branches you use. This is vital in order to remove any insects living in the wood as well as any pesticides or other impurities that may be found on the surface. I like to thoroughly clean branches under very hot water with a wire brush or scouring pad and use the tiniest bit of bleach to help disinfect it. Some people like to cook the wood in an oven before using it. I suppose that this is also another method that can be used to disinfect pieces before you use them, I’m good at starting accidental fires so I opt to avoid that one.

Next comes the water bowl, I have seen countless pieces of literature that say emeralds won’t drink out of water bowls... this is not the case. Almost all emeralds will drink from a bowl whenever they come in contact with it, this is the key. Contact with the water bowl can be achieved by either providing a very large bowl on the floor of the cage or an elevated bird-type bowl adjacent to the emerald tree boa’s branch. I like to use a Rubbermaid shoe box on the floor of the cage directly underneath the perch. The snake can easily reach this from its perch and will often drink from this bowl with no problems. A large water dish can also be very helpful when trying to provide humidity in the cage. A higher humidity level can be reached by simply placing the water dish over (or under) the heat source or by placing an air stone in it. The latter keeps the water a bit fresher, longer, which will aid in getting you snake to drink from a dish. I’ve noticed that emeralds will sometimes not drink from water that has been sitting too long. Sometimes, as soon as I change their water dish they will immediately come down for a long drink. No matter what type of water dish you put in the cage, never keep from spraying you snakes, this is very important. Spraying snakes is vital because not only do they drink from their coils but you can see a considerable difference in skin tone and scale iridescence when they are sprayed often. Spraying is also very important in order to stimulate breeding activity in my opinion. They best type sprayers are the small hand-held pump-type sprays that are usually readily available at Home Depot. These sprays work best because they emit a nice steady mist versus the disturbing pump action of the typical spray bottle which will only disturb and agitate your emerald. The pump mister spray bottle has a nice even spray that is more naturalistic, I often see my snakes drinking as I gently spray them down with this type of bottle. I also use the larger versions that consist of a larger (about 5 gal.) container, a hose and long nosed sprayer with an adjustable nozzle, similar to what exterminators use. When spraying an emerald, it is best to try to come from above in order to prevent spraying into the thermo-sensitive pits located on the snake’s labials. When you spray into these pits, you will often annoy the snake and disturb it from its typical resting position. This must be a horrible sensory overload, avoid doing it.

Obviously, your ultimate goal with all of this is to achieve the proper hydration and humidity levels, but there is such a thing as too much humidity. Always try to have some sort of drying out period for your snakes. At least a few hours in every 24 hour cycle. This is important in order to prevent any fungal infections that usually occur on the ventral surface of the animal. Scale rot is quite common in emeralds. Although not life threatening, they can severely scar or impair your snake. If scale rot does occur, it is important to see your vet or apply some sort of topical antibiotic followed with some slightly drier periods. By the time your snake finishes its next shedding cycle, the problem should be gone.


Lighting:
As with all Neotropical snakes, it is best to provide a 12/12 photoperiod for your emerald tree boa. In the Neotropics, there really isn’t a significant change in photoperiod that coincides with the seasons, so you can pretty much keep this schedule all year round. Now comes the real question: Fluorescent? Incandescent? Or None?
As far as flourescents go, they make the animals look absolutely great. They bring out an incredible iridescence and will not drastically affect cage temperature as it doesn’t emit any heat (ballast aside). A full spectrum light will also aid plant maintenance for those naturalistic buffs out there. Now, the downside. Any type of bright lighting causes noticeable stress in my experience. Emeralds do not tolerate bright lights very well, often opting to stay as far away from the light as possible or spending the daylight hours with their heads tucked tightly in their coils. In a well established emerald, lighting may be tolerated but it is my belief that this can be detrimental when trying to establish a fairly recent import or an animal that just isn’t well established yet. The best thing to do is to reach a comfortable balance between the two. It is often best to avoid a florescent light in order to ensure you animals health, remember, the emerald should always come first.


Temperatures:
Now, there will probably be people who will argue with my temperature regimen, but no one will ever be happy and that’s just something we’ll all have to live with. For the most part, I like to keep my temperature steady for my babies, juvies, and non-breeding adults. For these animals I like to keep a nice stable 80F all day long, sometimes with a slight drop at night and a slight raise during the day that happens naturally without any intentional manipulation, it usually never swings more than two or three degrees in any given direction. At these temps the animals remain nice and stable and have no problems whether digesting or shedding. Adults, especially breeders go through a much more complicated scheduling which I don’t want to get into in much detail because of the fact that it is very variable. As a rule, I try to keep adults at 80F during the off season when they are just putting on weight. Towards the end of September, I begin nightly drops into the lower 70's. Never below 70 though. The day time highs reach about 82-83F in order to offset the NTL’s (night time lows). This continues throughout the majority of the breeding season, when actual breeding is observed I often employ the use of rain chambers to increase humidity drastically which seems to put the icing on the cake. Later on, about mid to late March the males and non-gravid females are returned to the regular 80F temperatures. Possibly gravid females are also maintained at an even 80F but are offered a basking site of about 93F which they will often put to good use. After parturition they are returned to normal steady temps until the next season. Now many people will recommend the use of lower temperatures, even going so far as to say that lower temps will correct regurgitation problems. This is true to an extent but care must be taken that an animal with chronic regurgitation is not exposed to sub-optimal temperatures that will further debilitate it. It is my personal belief that an emerald tree boa should not be dropped below 70F, ever.

Feeding:
The emerald requires the most specialized feeding regimen of all the snakes I have ever kept. It’s kinda like having a pet gremlin, there are certain rules you MUST follow or you will end up with a big mess on your hands, often compromising the health of your emerald tree boa. First and foremost is size of prey. Whether your feeding a neonate or an eight foot Basin, always feed slightly smaller than the girth of your snake. It is much better to feed smaller prey items a bit more often versus a larger one once in a while. Smaller food items get digested and assimilated much quicker adding weight and size a bit faster, and most importantly will reduce the risk of regurgitation. As a rule, even my largest adults get nothing larger than a 3-week-old small rat, something within the weight range of 40 grams is ideal, even for an adult. A small rat every 14 or so days will keep your emerald tree boa in perfect conditions. Babies should be fed a small fuzzy or crawler (according to the size of the baby snake) every 5-7 days. A juvie will do well with a crawler to weanling mouse every 10 days or so. Although your emerald tree boa, especially the youngsters will often tempt you to feed them by sitting in their characteristically hunting pose, DON’T! You’ll regret it later on, trust me. Try not to feed more than one rodent at a sitting either, if you have to feed two mice then maybe you should be moving up to rats. Try to feed prekilled whenever possible in order to prevent injury to your emerald tree boa, live rodents usually react violently when snatched by those huge canine-like teeth. Your snake can easily lose an eye or earn a permanent scar, something you definitely don’t want. I feed thawed frozen rodents by warming them up with a space heater for a few seconds before offering them to the snake. Emerald tree boa’s are so thermo-sensitive that once accustomed, they will often snatch their meal before you can get it in the cage, it really makes you think sometimes. If an emerald won’t take a warmed rodent at first, you can usually entice a really weird feeding response by putting the warm rodent up to the snake’s face (being sure not to touch its face or it will hide) and then gently, but firmly pinching or tickling the snake underneath. I say that it’s a weird feeding response because often the snake will respond by simply opening it’s mouth and almost gently taking the rodent. Sometimes, you’ll get a violent grab but for the most part they just grasp the rodent and begin swallowing. Some people like to feed chicks to their emerald tree boa’s, I don’t recommend it because I’ve seen cases in other snakes where beaks can perforate certain sections of the G.I. tract and also because defecation from a chick meal smells absolutely horrible. In addition, there are salmonella possibilities if you really wanna get that anal, but let’s move on. Recent imports may often prove a bit harder to get to feed. It is often the case that an animal that will feed well and regularly will usually do it with 24 hours of arrival, this is the case with imports only. I’ve seen many cases where C.B. animals will not eat for a while when transplanted to a new cage or shipped out, this also happens often in acclimated wild-caught animals. If a recent import will not feed then you must begin the waiting game. The first thing you should do is have the animal properly dewormed. This way, little weight will be lost during its hunger strike. After that, it’s just a simple matter of offering a weaned rodent (live) every two weeks until one day you hear a shrill from the rodent as it is grabbed. Unless the animal is severely thin (which often denotes other underlying problems) you should never resort to force feeding. It is often very detrimental and can greatly lessen the chance of the snake ever feeding on its own. When a snake is starting to look a little on the thin side and is not eating I like to employ the use of a product called Nutri-Cal and a steel feeding needle on a medium-sized syringe. This does a good job of giving the snake a high calorie meal with minimal effort as orally giving this product in a watered down form takes but a few seconds. But before trying the Nutri-Cal you should also try a thawed or pre-killed (warmed) rodent with the previously mentioned technique. The secret here is to make sure the rodent is VERY warm, almost hot. Some wild caught emeralds that I keep have never eaten a live rodent while in my possession, weird huh. With the above techniques, I have gotten 98% of all emeralds in my possession to feed, very rarely have I ever resorted to force-feeding a rodent to an emerald. This is a good thing too because 80% of the time when I did have to force-feed the rodent was just re-gurged anyway. I have heard cases of neonates often refusing food too but I’ve never had this happen. I’ve had many picky feeders but never a baby that didn’t eventually accept a live fuzzy mouse. Some people will suggest using an anole but be very careful with this, it’s such an easy way to introduce parasites to your snakes. If you think you will have to feed an anole it may be a good idea to set up a few and de-worm them before feeding, the only problem I’ve encountered with this is keeping my girlfriend from becoming attached to the feeder animals (it happens with baby rats too, sigh!). Gravid females will often cease feeding a few months into pregnancy. If you suspect a female of being gravid and she continues to feed be sure to feed slightly smaller than usual as you don’t want any significantly sized meals impairing the development of the young in her body. Although there’s nothing to prove this, it’s been my experience that stillborn numbers are greatly increased when a female is fed late into pregnancy.

Overview:
In general, emerald tree boa’s are amazing animals, although difficult to keep they are well worth the extra effort. It’s amazingly gratifying to look into a cage and see this massive head staring out at you trailed by huge emerald coils and topped with bright white triangles that play on the light. They are truly magnificent animals that deserve nothing but the best as our guests. If you are not ready to spend a significant amount of time and money on the proper husbandry techniques and necessary equipment then an emerald is not for you. Why would you buy a brand new Lamborghini and park it out on the street? The same goes for this snake. Don’t buy an emerald if you expect to place an adult in a 10 or 15 gallon tank with a screen lid and a spotlight. If you’re looking for something cool to hang around your arm and show of to your friends, get a corn snake, or a Burmese python, not an emerald. In other words, this snake is a display animal, it is not in the nature of this snake to be handled and prodded. In the wild, an emerald is only seized seconds before its skull is pierced by a hawk, falcon, cat, or even monkey. They as a rule are not handle able animals. I know that tons of you out there are getting ready to write me and tell me that I’m wrong, you’re right. The point I’m trying to make is that although there are tons of exceptions, this is an animal that best benefits from being left alone. Treat them like the gems that they are and I guarantee that you won’t be disappointed.
