BASIC CAPTIVE CARE OF THE CORN SNAKE

Common Name: Corn Snake
Scientific Name: Elaphe guttata guttata
Distribution: Central & E. U.S.A.


NATURAL HABITAT :

Inhabits the grasslands, prairies, woodland and rocky
hillsides of Central U.S.A.
In captivity, a vivarium of at least 3' x 18" x 12" is
recommended for this species.


BEHAVIOR :

This is a excellent first time snake Which will become
very tame with regular handling. Supply dark hiding
places for cover when keeping this snake in captivity.


CAPTIVE ENVIRONMENT :

This snake is mostly nocturnal.
Supply a basking area with access to a cooler area.
Supply several climbing areas branches, logs, plants.
Cork bark can be used as hides.

TEMPERATURE :

Daytime temperature should be:
basking area 85 degrees F.
cool area 75 degrees F.
Night temperatures should range between 70-75 degrees F.
Use a reptile heat mat for 24-hour heat inside the vivarium.


HUMIDITY :

This snake needs only low to moderate levels of humidity.


WATER REQUIREMENTS :

Use only a small water bowl for drinking.

NUTRITIONAL REQUIREMENTS :

This species is a carnivore (meat eater).
Feed appropriate sized rodents, they will readily take mice and rats.
Will also eat small rabbits if available.
Also use a good vitamin supplement.
