BASIC CAPTIVE CARE OF THE COLUMBIAN RAINBOW BOA

Scientific Name: Epicrates cenchria maurus
Distribution: Northern S. America
Size: 5' - 7'
NATURAL HABITAT :
This terrestrial Snake inhabits the tropical rain forests
of Northern and South America. . In captivity a large vivarium of at least
4' x 2' x 18" is recommended for this species.
BEHAVIOR :
Most will become tame with regular handling.
Usually Quit friendly and easy to handle.
When handling large snakes always have at least one other
person in attendance.
CAPTIVE ENVIRONMENT :
Provide a basking area with access to a cooler area.
Supply several climbing areas of branches, logs, rocks.
Provide a humid hide for these snakes, a plastic box with a
hole in the top filled with fresh moss will do fine. Always
remember to change the moss regularly, at least once a week.
TEMPERATURE :
Daytime temperature should be:
basking area 90 degrees F.
cool area 78 degrees F.
Night temperatures should range between 75-80 degrees F.
Use a reptile heat mat for 24-hour heat inside the vivarium.
HUMIDITY :
This snake needs a constant high level of humidity.
WATER REQUIREMENTS :
Supply a large, fairly deep bowl for drinking and soaking.
Mist the vivarium every day to maintain moisture and humidity levels.
The vivarium should always be well ventilated.
NUTRITIONAL REQUIREMENTS :
This species is a carnivore (meat eater).
Feed appropriate sized rodents, they will readily take mice and rats.
Will also eat rabbits if available.
Also use a good vitamin supplement.
