The Desert Hairy Scorpion is the largest scorpion in North America. It is not a dangerous scorpion, to humans at least. Unless you are allergic to it, the Desert Hairy Scorpion's venom is pretty much harmless. This species is aggressive though, and will sting readily. Besides that, the only bad quality this scorpion has is that it can die if there is too much moisture in the tank. Being from the desert, the Desert Hairy Scorpion has adapted to getting it's water from the animals it eats. An occasional light misting won't hurt, but if you live in a humid area, you should think this over before purchasing your scorpion. Desert Hairy Scorpions prove to be a popular scorpion species in captivity due to it's size, beauty, and the fact that it is not a very dangerous species.

Range Deserts of southwest United States.
Habitat Found under debris in sandy areas.
Type Terrestial, but will burrow to some extent.
Diet Babies eat pinhead crickets, that have been crushed, or had the legs taken off them so that the scorpions can catch the food easily. Adults eat crickets, and other large insects.
Full Grown Size 5 to 7 inches.
Growth Slow speed.
Lifespan Long.
Temperature 75 to 85 degrees F.
Humidity Low. One misting per two weeks.
Temperament Aggressive.
Housing 2 1/2 to 5-gallon tank. Floor space is more important than height.
Substrate 3 to 4 inches of sand.
Other Names Arizona Hairy Scorpion, and Giant Desert Hairy Scorpion.

*Please note that ALL scorpions have a certain amount of venom. Although most people are not affected by this species, some people may be allergic to the venom, or just more sensitive, making it a dangerous situation. This is one of the reasons that people should not handle this scorpion. Affects of this scorpions' natural defenses may vary between people. All scorpions should be considered dangerous, so be careful, because you don't want to find out if you are allergic or more sensitive the HARD WAY!
