BASIC CAPTIVE CARE OF THE BULL SNAKE


Common Name: Bull Snake
Scientific Name: Pituopis melanoleucus sayi
Distribution: S. Canada & Mid-U.S.A.
Size: 7' - 9'


NATURAL HABITAT :

A terrestrial species that is found in prairie and semi-desert
and grassland habitats from Canada to Mexico.
When captive, adults require a 4' x 2' X 2' enclosure.

BEHAVIOR :

Most will settle and become tame with regular handling.
Supply plenty of dark hiding places when in captivity.


CAPTIVE ENVIRONMENT :

Provide a basking area with access to a cooler area.
Provide rocky basking areas, These snake like crevices and
caves which can be made from rocks or even old bricks.


TEMPERATURE :

Daytime temperature should be gradient from 78 to 85 degrees F.
Night time temperatures should range between 70-75 degrees F.
Use a reptile heat mat for 24-hour heat inside the tank.


HUMIDITY :

This species requires only low levels of humidity.

WATER REQUIREMENTS :

Supply only a small water bowl for drinking.

NUTRITIONAL REQUIREMENTS :

This species is a carnivore (meat eater).
Feed appropriate sized rodents (mice, rats).
Will also take rabbits.
Also use a good vitamin supplement.
