BASIC CAPTIVE CARE FOR THE YELLOW HEADED GECKO


Common Name: Yellow-headed Gecko
Scientific Name: Gonatodes fuscus
Distribution: Cuba & South Florida
Size: 3" - 3.75"


NATURAL HABITAT :


This gecko is arboreal it usually occupies forest habitats,
Likes plenty of dense plant cover.
When kept in captivity, Adult yellow headed Geckos
require a 24"X17"x12" vivarium.


BEHAVIOUR :


Males may become territorial, Keep separate from other males.
Very Active and Difficult to hold, Their skin is easily Damaged
so take care. To much handling will stress the animal.


CAPTIVE ENVIRONMENT :


Use full spectrum lighting 12-14 hours per day.
Provide a basking area with access to a cooler area.
This lizard likes plenty of hiding places ( imitation plants).
rocks, bark hides and branches to climb on. Use bark substrate.


TEMPERATURE :


Daytime temperature should be:
Basking Area 80 to 85 degrees F.
Cool Area 78 degrees F.
Night temperature should range between 70-75 degrees F.
Use a reptile heat mat for 24-hour ground heat inside the vivarium.


HUMIDITY / WATER REQUIREMENTS:


These Lizards require a moderate to high level of humidity
Mist the vivarium at least every other day to maintain humidity.
Keep the vivarium well ventilated.


NUTRITIONAL REQUIREMENTS :


This species is a carnivore, these lizards like assorted insects.
Always offer a variety, small black or brown crickets, small
mealworms, waxworms. Will also take small amounts of fruit,
mashed into a liquid. Always use a good dusting supplement.
